Summer work in England while you study EnglishEvery summer there is an influx of foreign students who wish to study English but also want to work so as to finance the cost of their studies. The are many opportunities to work during the summer although you should bear in mind that you will be competing with many other people who are native English speakers, such as university students and indeed unemployed people who cannot find a job during the rest of the year. This means you will most probably find a job that we English feel is underpaid or quite honestly beneath us. Not so bad you say, as you are probably young and mostly focused on improving your English language skills. My word of warning is that these jobs generally involve limited contact with the general public and hence little need to be speaking English, or at least speaking to a native English speaker. You will probably be in a restaurant kitchen without a native speaker in sight. For this reason we recommend working for English academy such as MovingOn Courses that will also provide classes and ensure that your whole experience is about language learning. This school also offer gift vouchers in the form of Summer work au pair so if you can persuade your parents to gift you with one of their summer courses then all the better. If you are not fortunate enough to find summer work with an English school then at least avoid the language agencies in your own countries. They invariably send large groups of students to the same hotels etc and so the final result is that you spend all the time speaking in your native language without a word of English. Furthermore, if the language agency also includes English classes with an academy then there are more potential problems to consider. The distance from your accommodation to the language school (and your place of work), the class size i.e. the number of students studying English with you and finally if those students have the same level of English as you. Study all the information carefully otherwise you will learn by your mistakes rather than English!! |
