Working Overseas and Relevant Currency Exchange Considerations

It can already be a very daunting prospect to move to another country and then take up a new role of employment. After all, we all take it for granted that we are familiar with our own currency and therefore always know exactly how much we are being paid.

This is where it will really help to familiarise yourself with how the currency works in your selected new country; find out what the exchange rate is to the pound and research the average wage that is usually payable in the area.

You must remember that other countries will not necessarily pay the same types of rates as you were accustomed to in the UK. working overseas and currency exchange is a subject that is not quite so cut and dried.

Many of the southern European countries, which tend to be very popular choices with the British are actually poorer than the UK. Their GDP is lower and the average wage can be quite considerably lower than in the UK. So if you’re expecting a rate per hour like you were used to before - forget it.

In contrast, when you head farther north in Europe, wages get progressively better as the average standard of living increases. Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and Switzerland all tend to offer excellent rates of pay for employment; often much higher than in the UK. Scandinavia can be higher still, however, you will have to get used to income tax levels at around 50% in some areas - ouch!
